" Dear Helen, I just wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying your piano lessons. I wasn’t sure whether someone of my age (approaching 60) could make any progress, but your patience has kept me on the “straight and narrow” and I now feel that I will be able to achieve a reasonable level of proficiency. (I know it will take time!!). I relish our chats about the theory and you are very good at pointing out the technical details as we are going along. I promise that some of it is sinking in. I look forward to your lessons. They are a welcome diversion to my general working week. Thank you very much, Jamie "

A message for you from Helen ....
I love teaching tailor-made lessons that suit the pace and interests of the individual. You will find me to be encouraging, patient and knowledgeable. If you are interested in starting piano, keyboard or theory lessons then I have an abundance of resources that will make this fun and exciting for you. Alternatively if you are looking to develop your playing, then it will be a pleasure to encourage you with this and see you progress!
My first memory of playing a keyboard instrument was of playing a church organ. My feet couldn’t reach the pedal board, but I loved it! I was given a keyboard one Christmas, taught myself some tunes and enjoyed it so much that I was fortunate enough to start piano lessons. I then got an acoustic piano which is still in the family and is played every day! My piano teacher encouraged me to learn scales and arpeggios, to develop my own taste in music through choosing pieces that I wanted to learn, and worked with me through the Associated Board exams, achieving a distinction at grade 8 whilst I was studying A level music. I benefitted from having two piano teachers at University and gave recitals throughout my music degree, specialising in performance in my final year.
I still believe that scales and exercises can be really useful for building a successful piano technique for strengthening your hands and improving flexibility. I can help you to learn this and also teach you about music theory, how to interpret music notation and generally help you develop the way that you hear and improvise music. Everyone is different and I will work with you to find out what you enjoy and help you achieve your goals. Daily practise on those black and white notes will help you progress quickly of course!
My fees are usually £36 per hour and lessons can be given in 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions. Why not contact me for to arrange a few piano lessons if it’s something you have been thinking about for a while?
